The Setting and the Trap

The Temple Church, consecrated in 1185 and built by the Knights Templar as a round church in deliberate defiance of the traditional cruciform layout, provides an eerily appropriate stage for the confrontation. Its circular nave, lined with ten stone effigies of knights, had seemed to Langdon and Sophie the perfect fulfillment of Saunière's poem—"In London lies a knight a Pope interred."
